How To Wear A Button Down Shirt This Summer

Products purchased through this post may earn me a commission.

Button Down Shirt

No matter how hot the weather gets, I love wearing button down shirts! Button down shirts can make any outfit way more interesting, they’re great for transitioning into fall, keeping the sun off your shoulders, or just staying warm indoors.

Outfit Details: Urban Outfitters Dress (similar here, & here), Vintage Blouse (similar here, & here), Amazon Sunglasses, Express Sandals c/o

1. Wear A Button Down Over A Summer Dress

This spaghetti strap dress is so cute on it’s own, but when layered with this cream colored button down shirt it takes this outfit to the next level! Try pairing your summer dresses with your go to button down shirts for a whole new outfit.

2. Roll The Sleeves & Show The Cuff

To stay cool and casual I always roll up the sleeves on my button down shirts. If you want to show off the cuff instead of hiding like I did here. Simply grab the cuff and pull it up towards you just past your elbow. Next, grab the extra fabric at the base and roll it up onto itself again and again until you reach the base of the cuff. That’s it! A fun new way to roll your sleeves while showing off the detail of your cuffs.

3. Choose Button Down Shirts That Are Breathable

In order to stay cool and comfortable while wearing a button down shirt this summer, remember to choose fabrics that are breathable. Linen and cotton are my go to fabric choices!

4. Tie It In A Knot

Whether you’re wearing a button down shirt over a dress like I did here, or over a bodysuit like I did below, try leaving it unbuttoned and tied in a knot. That way it will show off your outfit underneath, plus the knot helps accentuating the waistline!

5. Wear It Over One Shoulder

If you want to show off your outfit underneath even more, try wearing your button down shirt on just one shoulder like I did above.

Outfit Details: J.Jill Button Down, Express Bodysuit c/o, Amazon Shorts & Sunglasses, Gordmans Sandals (similar here)

6. Leave It Unbuttoned

An easy way to wear a button down shirt this summer is to throw one on over your outfit unbuttoned. Love how simply wearing a button down shirt makes even the most casual outfit look elevated!

7. Tie It Around Your Waist

If you get too hot wearing one, just take it off and tie it around your waist!

My Mother’s Day started at 4am with a nursing baby My Mother’s Day started at 4am with a nursing baby in my arms, a toddler crawling into my bed and falling asleep on my shoulder, & a doggie sleeping across my legs. 💕 They have no idea what today is, but I’m feeling so blessed to be surrounded by all my babies on Mother’s Day 👶🐶👧 Even if it was at 4am 🥱

Not pictured our dog Sydney. 🐶 I’m so tired I didn’t even notice until after we got these pictures 🤪 I knew I was forgetting something! 🙈

After laboring at home for 2 hours we JUST made it to the hospital maybe 45 minutes before he came out with 2 quick pushes! It all happened so fast my head is still spinning. 🥹

So thankful my SIL @thedivinemissem77 answered her phone and came quickly to stay with Audrey & my hubby @npbrady9 taking care of everything else as we rushed to the hospital. ♥️ God is so good & we couldn’t be happier with the newest member of our family 🤗
