Learning to Screen Print – Paper Stencil

There’s three different techniques used for screen printing: paper stencils, drawing fluid & screen filler, and photographic emulsion. For my first try at screen printing I used a paper stencil since it seemed to be the easiest.

To screen print with a paper stencil I first needed to create my stencil. I drew a floral design on a sheet of paper and cut it out using a utility knife.

Next I taped my screen to prevent ink from getting on the frame and also to cover the exposed mesh because my screen is larger than the sheet of paper. It’s as simple as that! Now I’m ready to print.

A cool thing about screen printing using a paper stencil is that the stencil will adhere to the screen as soon as the ink passes over it. When I had finished making my prints (or when the ink begins to dry in the screen) the screen needs to be immediately cleaned and the stencil will have to be discard.
