Step One Make A List
I want you to spend a few minuets and make a list of what your closet’s missing. If you’re not sure where to start here are a few questions to ask yourself. Also, keep your list handy incase you think of things throughout the day you want to add to it.
Did you get rid of some clothing or accessories that were too worn out to wear or no longer fit? If yes, do you need to replace those items?
Is there any storage container, hooks, baskets, shelf dividers, shoe racks, etc. that would help your closet function better?
Do you have enough hangers for the amount of space in your closet? That way you’re ready to hang new clothing as you buy them. Make sure you give yourself enough hangers for your space, but not too many that your closet becomes over crowded.
Are there any clothing or accessories in your closet that you LOVE but no longer wear because you don’t have the proper pieces to pair with it? Think layering pieces like camis, t-shirts, blouses. Accessories like shoes, bags, jewelry. Lastly, do you have the proper socks and undergarments to wear with it? If not add them to your list.
Lastly, do you have anything that needs fixing or updating to make your closet function better? Missing or loose door knob, squeaky door, or dim lightbulb? Add those items to your list too.
Step Two Update Your Hangers
If you’re looking for an inexpensive yet very high impact way to update you’re closet get matching hangers! Matching hangers will take any closet up a notch, give the closet a nice calming effect, and put the focus on the clothing not the mismatched hangers.
My favorite hangers are the slimline velvet hangers. They’re great because they don’t take up much space, their non-slip design keeps clothing in place, and they are inexpensive. This box of 50 for $25 I found at my local grocery store, but you can also find them on Amazon for the same price. I also chose hangers with silver hooks because they blend in with the silver hanging bar in my closet.
I ended up needing 42 hangers to replace the mismatched ones I was using, and now I have a few extra hangers for when I buy new clothing!
Step Three Shop Your Home
Maybe what you’re looking for you already have? I found three empty baskets (similar here, here and here) that fit perfectly in the back corners of my closet. One’s for storing sandals, one’s for clutches, and the last basket below is great for storing clothing I want to sell online. I tucked that basket in the opposite corner of my closet.
Step Four Put Your List Somewhere Safe
After spending 10-15 minuets shopping your house and making a list of what your closet needs, put your list someplace safe so you can reference it later when you’re ready to shop. Make a plan to sit down and order everything online or add them to your shopping list to purchase the next time you’re out running errands.
I like to keep my list in Evernote so I can access it on my computer or phone. Next time I come across a coupon, a good sale, or if someone gives me a gift card I have a list of things I know I want/need to shop from.
For example, Express is having a sale so I ordered a pair of jeans I had my eye on for a while now.
Don’t feel like you need to buy everything at once. Just keep your list handy so when you come across a good deal you can feel confident about purchasing it.
