Even though I don’t work in a typical office, pencil skirts are still a go to for me. I love wearing them to church, for a date night, or even a night out with friends. Pencil skirts are so versatile! Recently I’ve been told several of you don’t like wearing skirts, so I’m sharing a few tips for styling them. These tips will not only work for a date night outfit, but for the office too.

Pencil Skirts Should Be Worn At The Waist
In order for a pencil skirt to fit correctly the skirts waistline should come to the smallest part of your waste or a few inches higher. This skirt fits right below my waist, so I decided to bring it up a few inches with the help of a belt. This trick works great if any of your skirts are just a little loose and you don’t want to bother having them taken in.
Define Your Waistline
Since pencil skirts are high waisted, show off that small waistline by defining it. Try tucking your top in, tying the bottom of your shirt in a knot (like I did here, & here), or wear a crop top.
The Best Length For A Pencil Skirt
The length of a pencil skirt should end just above, at, or just below the knees. If you’re petite try keeping your pencil skirts on the shorter side if you can.
Choose Pencil Skirts With Slits
I also prefer wearing pencil skirts with slits in them for the same reason as mentioned above. Showing a bit more leg, especially for petites helps you look taller.
Heel Height
A good rule of thumb is to wear heels when the length of your skirt comes past your knees and flats (or low heels) when the hemline is shorter than knee length.
Pencil Skirts Are So Versatile
Dress up a pencil skirt for work with a nice blouse, blazer, and heels. For a date night try wearing it with a silk cami, clutch, and heels. Lastly, dress it down with a pair of ankle boots and a vintage t-shirt.
